Floris holds a talk at Kansai Gaidai University, Japan

On the 7th of November Floris was invited to hold a talk at Kansai Gaidai University in Japan. The talk was part of a course organised by Dr Seong Kim-Lee entitled ‘the Japanese Influence on Western Art and Design.’

As part of the curriculum the talk focussed on the emergence of export ceramics in Japan through the lens of various international influences. Entitled, “Early Modern Global ‘Japanese’ Design: The International Origins of Japanese Ceramics” the talk highlighted the interwoven stories of Korean migrants, Chinese traders, European consumers and many others whose influence gave shape to Japanese export ceramics. In doing so it highlighted many of the themes of our project.

It was a wonderful opportunity to present our research to students from all over the world. The excitement by the students for their studies of Japan as well as issues of design and Art were palpable and the Q&A was a great opportunity to interact with many of them.
