Migration Matters Conference: Call for Papers

Date: 24th and 25th JULY, 2023

Place: ONLINE

This conference will explore the networks that facilitated migration and integration in the period 1500-1800. In particular, the focus will be on the transfer of technology and knowledge, especially forms of embodied or tacit knowledge. In doing so the conference will explore questions such as: How did networks facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technology? What types of networks were most conducive to migrant knowledge integration and assimilation in the host environment?

Whether based around religious institution, place, ‘ethnicity,’ or family, networks and institutions acted as drivers and conduits of migration and the exchange of ideas, skill, and knowledge. By exploring such networks and institutions, this workshop will evaluate their differing impacts on various streams of migration. In taking a global approach, the conference will seek to develop dialogue across different contexts and explore their points of connection.

The conference will be held online. Papers should be no longer than 15 minutes. To apply, please send a max. 300 word abstract and brief CV to floris.vanswet@northumbria.ac.uk with the subject line ‘Networks and Institutions Conference.’

We intend to follow up the conference with an in-person or hybrid workshop that would lead to a journal special issue. In your application, please clearly indicate if you would potentially also be interested in participating in this workshop and special issue.
