Early Modern Science, Technology, and Institutions
On Friday May 13 Felicia, Rémi and Floris attended the ‘Early Modern Science, Technology, and Institutions’ Conference at the University of Manchester. The conference, which focused on economics and economic history, was loosely based around the origins of the Great Divergence. A busy schedule of talks was interspersed by two keynotes by Debin Ma and David de la Croix, and a closing address by Stephen Morgan. The incorporation of poster presentations by PhD students was a great way to bring in the varied research by younger scholars and presented a wide range of topics to enrich the conversations.
A wide array of talks addressed issues such as institutional makeup and the creation and use of science. The team presented a joint paper introducing both the project itself as well as giving a work in progress on a number of case studies. Afterward we had a wonderful dinner at Tai Wu, one of the largest and oldest Chinese restaurants in Manchester and were able to discuss our research whilst enjoying a delicious meal.
