A Meeting of Minds

On Wednesday the 26th of January, Nicholas McGee from Durham University visited us in Newcastle to discuss his research with us.

In advance of the meeting, Nick shared a chapter of his forthcoming book on interactions between the Qing and British empires in managing the sovereignties and movements of Chinese migrant communities. We talked at length about the relations between the Qing state and China’s diasporic communities, Qing universalism, and networks of circulation in Asia. After our session in the Northumbria Research Commons, Nick joined us for lunch at the local Chinese restaurant.

It is always a great opportunity to be able to discuss our project with other scholars, learn from their research, and exchange ideas. Thanks again to Nick for sharing his fantastic research and insights with us, and we look forward to continue our discussions in the future!
